Behind the Scenes with THE DEAD SEASON
The Dead Season (The Dead Season: A Raine Stockton Dog Mystery (Volume 6)) was the book that almost wasn't written. Very faithful readers will remember from 2008 that the next book in the Raine Stockton Dog Mystery series (after Gun Shy ) was supposed to be a book called Cold Kill. When the series was cancelled by the original publisher (NAL/Signet), Cold Kill fell by the wayside while I experimented with lighter Raine Stockton adventures, Silent Night (Silent Night: A Raine Stockton Dog Mystery) and Bone Yard (Bone Yard (Raine Stockton Dog Mystery) ).
Many readers were unhappy that Bone Yard, a novella, was only available in digital format because of its length. Because I didn't want anyone to miss an installment, I decided to add some pages to Bone Yard to make it long enough to release in print. The simplest way to do that was to add a bonus short story at the end. I remembered the old outline for Cold Kill and thought it would be perfect to develop into bonus material for the print version of Bone Yard.
That's right. The Dead Season, arguably one of the most complex and intense of the Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries, started out as a short story.
I had just finished Silent Night, and thought the quiet weeks after the holiday season would be the perfect time to complete this short project. I started it the first of January, and planned to give readers a mid-winter surprise with the short installment (and the print version of Bone Yard) in early February.
But by February the book was already 200 pages long with no end in sight. And there it stayed. And stayed. And stayed. Three quarters of the way through, I couldn't write another word. I'm not entirely sure why. The subject matter was challenging. The logistics were complicated. And it was cold on that mountain.
All I know is that when I reached the scene on the bridge (those of you who read the book will be surprised at how close to the end I was!) I could not spend another moment on that freezing mountainside. I walked away, quite certain I would never finish the book.
I planted my garden, I painted my porch, I spruced up my house, I completly forgot about Raine and Cisco for over a month. But maybe a little springtime was all the encouragement I needed, because during my "vacation" I suddenly knew what was missing from the book. I went back and revised the entire thing, adding the device of the police interview to frame the story, and finished it all in ten days.
As for the ambiguity of the ending... that had been my plan all along. I just had to struggle to get there.
The Dead Season is without a doubt one of the most difficult books I've ever written, but I hope that translates into a gripping and memorable experience for my readers. As for Bone Yard --- what do you know? It turns out I had enough pages for print after all!

This is my absolute favorite series!!!!!! I love the way Raine and Cisco react to each other! I know he's a golden but he is just like my lab Harley!!! And I understand Raine SO WELL! Keep writing these books, because they are truly amazing! I hope we get a new hook soon:-)
When is the next raine stockton book?
I'm working on the new book HIGH IN TRIAL now. So much depends on how it goes... if it turns out to be short and fun, as I have planned, you'll have it for Christmas. If it goes the way of THE DEAD SEASON....who knows???
I'm a lifelong lover of dogs and have never been without at least one.
I love the Raine Stockton series & will ALWAYS buy everyone you write (I'm loving them on Kindle).
Hope you never get tired of writing them because they are unique.
I'm so glad you're enjoying thebooks on Kindle. I think they are the perfect length for an e-reader, and I read almost all mysteries on Kindle now.
Thanks for supporting Raine and Cisco! I'm planning to have their next adventure ready for a March release.
I am an avid reader of mysteries and am always looking for a "new" author to read. I came across Smoky Mountain Tracks in the local library. It didn't take long before I was hooked on Cisco and Raine. I read your first three Raine Stockton mysteries and, because I couldn't find them in the library, bought the next three.
The series gets better and better and The Dead Season left me breathless. I can't wait until I can read the next adventure shared by Cisco and Raine!
I have so enjoyed this series and have read all but the last 2 which I will be reading as soon as I finish this comment to the author who is marvelous!!! I so wish that this wonderful series about Raine and Cisco would continue. I love dogs and especially Golden ones as they are so sweet and loving. Please Donna continue this series.

Got your first Raine Stockton book thru BookBub and that was it for me - I read all the rest in quick succession!! When I finished High In Trial I was so sad I couldn't immediately begin the next (as I had been doing). Add my name to the list of fans who can't wait for the next one.
I loved the Raine Stockton series so much that I've read them all twice! My brother-in-law has a Golden Retriever & she is the sweetest dog I've ever been around. I think my next dog is going to be a Golden. I can't wait for your next book.
I sure hope more books are coming! I just finished the last book and I want more!
